Rubber roofing is probably something you are unfamiliar with if you are a homeowner. The benefits of rubber roofing are outstanding, and you should be aware of them as a homeowner. If you are considering purchasing a new roof for your home, take the time to learn all about the good and bad of rubber roofing to help you make a more appropriate decision.

Pros & Cons of Rubber Roofing

There are pros and cons to rubber roofing, just like with anything else. Let’s start with the pros first because they will clearly outweigh the bad.

  • Cost efficiency – You may assume that rubber roofs will be more expensive because they have more advantages. The opposite is actually true. Rubber roofs should only be installed by a contractor who is properly licensed. But that doesn’t mean that installation costs will be high. The costs for the roof and installation are fairly low compared to other roofing materials.
  • Rubber roofing is lightweight – The thought of rubber may seem heavy, but it is actually pretty light. This makes for extremely fast installation, which can greatly cut down the cost of having the roof installed. The contractors will simply glue the rubber down using heat.
  • Lasts a long time – You can feel confident knowing that your rubber roof will last you for many years. The majority of rubber roofs are installed in a single layer instead of multiple pieces. So, depending on your roof type, only several seams, if any, will be present. That said, you can count on your rubber roof to last you at least 50 years, possibly longer. They are designed to hold up in the strongest winds and storms.
  • Quick repairs – If you ever need to have your rubber roof repaired due to a leak, you can count on a quick repair. That is because contractors will only need to use a single tube of liquid rubber or tape to repair a minor leak.
  • Easy to maintain – Rubber roofs are quite easy to maintain. That is because they rarely require any maintenance over the time you have one. This is not true with other types of roofs.
  • Fire resistant – Rubber roofing is great because rubber is durable and resistant to fires. This means that anything capable of producing a fire, including lightning strikes, will not make it through a rubber roof.
  • Energy efficient – Another benefit of having a rubber roof is the fact that it can help you reduce your AC and heating costs since they are energy efficient. They can also work in keeping your home insulated.

Cons of Rubber Roofing

The good news is that there is only one con to having a rubber roof installed, which is its appearance. Even with their black color, you can have it painted white or off-white if you want to change the appearance. Acrylic paint is beneficial because it extends the roof’s life even more.
